Notes from a Shelter Register

August 26, 2016 by Alicia DiCocco Leave a Comment

IMG_4144Trail & Shelter Registers are a great way for the trail to tell its own story. The following are excerpts from the Skyline Lodge Register:

8/16/2014 Bruce – Papa Tortuga – SOBU – stopped for a break at 3:30pm

I saw trail crew moving large bolders, whew! What hard work. The Trail is a wonderful place through rock, roots, and mud. What a great treasure. I greatly appreciate the work they do and those before them in keeping this magnificent treasure accessible. Thanks all.

8/13/14 – hiked in just after 2:30pm in sideways rain, wind and fog. I’m sure I will get to Waterbury before my boots dry again. This is a serious storm! 40-50 mph wind and cold rain. Maybe a zero-day if the weather is still tempermental tomorrow. Saw a big cow moose up on the snowbowl today. She is doing much better than I in the rain. Cheers to week 1, and ½ way to Canada! Danny Moore

8/14/14 – in at 4:45 am – wow! This shelter is awesome. I’m so torn I really want to stay but it’s so early.

9/3-9/4 – So nice here. Glad I planned a zero day. Sunrise was awesome! Forest service workers stopped by for a quick check, glad to see someone looking out for the trail. Northbound tomorrow for Cooley Glen. Nice slow trip to the App Gap by Sunday. Happy Hiking. Pete

10/29/14 – Had a delightful slumber here last night. No issues with mice. I shared morning coffee with two cow moose across the pond! Southbound I go, and I wonder how far my feet will take me today. It’s a shame I have to go home tomorrow. Life is so much easier on the trail. Thank goodness it’s always here.

Pounce (AT ’08, LT 08-09, PCT 12, CDT 14) Yeah, I’m an addict.

5/24/15 – first visit in 25 years. I love it up here. Charlie Billings, Denver, CO

6/10/15 – What a beautiful shelter. Happy to be spending the night here after a long day. Hopefully we’ll get a nice sunset.

6/25/15 – Finally found people! A gentle bohemian couple who were busy making a pot of coffee with the beautiful view from the porch as their kitchen window. Great dog. They seemed to be arguing a little. When I’m in the grumps, I like to get some good exercise and sweat out the aggression I feel. Maybe they’ll read this… Always in search of a warm place to sleep and a big bowl of cereal!

-Cereal Killer

7/6/15 – Love it and stayed the night – Hummingbird and Goose

7/16/15 – 1 grandmother, 1 daughter, 1 son-in-law, and a 3 year old and a 18 moth old, lunch hike from Route 59

7/16/15 – Half way!! Enjoyed some apple crisp, coffee, and conversation

7/16/15 – So happy to be in for the night. I started at Stark’s Nest today, did my biggest day yet at 21.3 miles. Will see how the knees do tomorrow. Heading either to sucker brook or to my car at Brandon gap – just depends on the day. So happy to see more people in this section. Not many folks up north.

This shelter is amazing! Wish I could stay here for the night… But I have to keep on moving. But first, chocolate & chips to celebrate the half way mark. Rum Runner

8/20/2015 – 2st time through Breadloaf. Just a couple nights up here from Middlebury to Lincoln. Love this spot. Beautiful sunset on the ledge. Beautiful sunrise over the pond. Great dinner and convo with JuneBug last night. Special Place.

9/25/15 – Going to hike with my bro to Lincoln Gap. Last time I was here was when Nixon resigned in 74 when I ddi the trail end to end. I was 15! Bob and Midge Crawford

11/26/15 Beautiful Thanksgiving Hike! Moderate temperature, high 40s. Overcase, with some sunlight. Five person group, working off some calories before the bigt dinner! Theres snow on the pond, can’t imagine the ice is too thick with the warm temperatures. Skylight pond trail is always a treat.

6/27/16 – Just some Floridians trying to survive a 3 day hike. So happy to find this place! Lovely. Views, great shelter, and friendly people.

7/3/16 – brief stop to listen to the frogs and enjoy the view. Onward to burnt hill trail.
