Microspikes, Mittens, & Merriment: Winter Trails Day 2016

April 12, 2016 by Alicia DiCocco Leave a Comment

stimson hikeIn February, the Green Mountain Club celebrated our annual Winter Trails Day event at the CC Outdoor Store in Waterbury. GMC worked in partnership with the CC Outdoor Store, a GMC Business Member, to plan the event through Waterbury’s annual Winterfest celebration, a week-long festival aimed at promoting outdoor winter recreation.

Throughout Winter Trails Day, hikers met at the store to sign up for one of the eight free, guided hikes, snack on treats donated by Lake Champlain Chocolates, Vermont Smoke & Cure, and KC Bagel Café, and enter the raffle before heading off on their trips. The hikes took participants on popular trails in and around the Waterbury area including Camel’s Hump, Hunger Mountain, and Perry Hill. With its gentle conditions, the Camel’s Hump View Trail proved to be on the day’s most popular hikes, especially among children and first time hikers.

IMG_2690Following the hikes, participants returned to the store to warm up around the fire and hear the raffle drawing. Among the awesome prizes were some Leki and MSR hiking poles, a stay at GMC’s Wheeler Pond cabin, an Osprey backpack, and a package of GMC maps.

IMG_2654Over 80 hikers came out to take part in the fun, many to experience new trails or to give winter hiking a try. We had a blast chatting and hiking with you and are so glad that we got to celebrate this season together. Thank you to all of the hikers, hike leaders, and donors for making the day a success!
