2018 Spring Trail Work Days

April 26, 2018 by Kristin McLane Leave a Comment

Now that the snow is melting, it’s time to start getting the trail in shape for hiking season!  Most basic trail maintenance on the Long Trail System is done by volunteers.  Pieces of the trail are adopted by GMC’s fourteen sections and by individuals, which you can see in the map below:

Are you an experienced trail worker, or someone who is new to trail maintenance but wants to get your feet wet?  You can see what is involved in a typical work day on last year’s blog and then join one (or more!) of these upcoming section-led trail work days:

  • Bennington Section: April 28, May 12-13
  • Brattleboro Section: April 28-29, May 19
  • Bread Loaf Section: June 9
  • Burlington Section:May 5, 12, 19, 25, June 2
  • Connecticut Section: TBD (contact Mike Shaw)
  • Killington Section: May 12, June 9
  • Laraway Section: May 5, 12, 19, 26, June 2, 9
  • Manchester Section: May 12
  • Montpelier Section: May 12, 19
  • Northeast Kingdom Section: TBD (contact Cathi Brooks)
  • Northern Frontier Section: TBD (contact Ferdinand Lauffer)
  • Sterling Section: May 6, 13 (contact Kevin Hudnell)
  • Upper Valley Ottauqhechee Section: May 19
  • Worcester Section: May 19-20

The southern-most sections are already getting to work this weekend, while the northern-most sections still have too much snow coverage to even think about trail maintenance.  Dates will be added here as they are available so make sure to check back later if you’d like to work farther north this spring.  And make sure to check the sections’ websites and GMC’s calendar for trail work opportunities throughout the hiking season.

Want to adopt your own piece of trail?  Check out our available trails and get in touch!

Ask a Science Teacher: Why is the Long Trail so Muddy?

March 27, 2023

Vermont — and especially the Long Trail — is known for being sort of muddy. We even have an official fifth season, "mud season." Why is Vermont (sometimes known as "Vermud") and the Long Trail so muddy? Why is the Long Trail so muddy? To answer, we asked Joe Bahr, newly minted author of the … Read more
