September 12, 2024 by Lily LaRegina Leave a Comment

Long Trail Day is almost here! Celebrate the trails and your fundraising efforts with day-of activities on Saturday, September 21. Several GMC membership sections have organized group hikes around the state, and GMC staff will be hosting events in the Stowe area. We look forward to celebrating Long Trail Day with you next week!

It’s not too late to join our Long Trail Day fundraising efforts. Register now and start fundraising among your family and friends, or make a general donation to Long Trail Day.

GMC Staff – Stowe Area

Trail Magic at Barnes Camp

Stop by the Barnes Camp visitor center, located at the base of Smugglers’ Notch in Stowe, for trail magic and hiking info from GMC staff and volunteers. Enjoy snacks and swag from some of our event donors and sponsors like Cabot, DarnTough, and Vermont Smoke and Cure before exploring the Barnes Camp boardwalk, a hike on one of the many trails in the Mount Mansfield area, or enjoying a fall foliage drive through Smugglers’ Notch on Vermont 108.

Benefit Bake at American Flatbread

Celebrate Long Trail Day with a Benefit Bake at American Flatbread’s Stowe location. Grab a pre or post-hike bite from 2pm to close. A portion of every eat-in and to-go order ($3.50 per large, $1.75 per small) will go toward Long Trail Day. Thank you, American Flatbread, for supporting the Green Mountain Club’s work and celebrating the trails with us as a Long Trail Day sponsor!

The Bread Loaf Section

Cooley Glen, Emily Proctor Loop

This loop hike in the Bread Loaf Wilderness goes up the Cooley-Glen trail to the Long Trail, traverses some of the Vermont Presidentials to Emily Proctor Shelter, then descends down the Emily Proctor Trail. The hike is considered moderate to strenuous, gaining over 3000 ft. in elevation over the 12.4miles.  Contact Philip Werner at [email protected]  or (617) 549-7663 for more information and to RSVP.

Emily Proctor out-and-back

Burnt Hill to Middlebury Gap

Starting from the Burnt Hill trailhead, hike 5-6 miles of moderately challenging terrain to Middlebury Gap.  Depending on time and participation, this can include an out-and-back to Boyce Shelter and/or Silent Cliff.  Expect a moderate pace. Contact Beth Eliason at [email protected] for more information and to RSVP.

Worth Mountain

Hike Worth Mountain from Middlebury Gap.  This hike is 5.4 miles round-trip with about 1000 feet of elevation change. Enjoy open views in different directions and beautiful Lake Pleiad. Expect a moderate pace and difficulty. Contact Ken Corey at (802) 349-3733 or [email protected] to register.

Post-hike celebration at Drop-In Brewing

This is considered a difficult hike and participants can expect a moderate pace. 5.6 miles. 2550′ elevation gain. Group limit 10. Contact hike leader David Hathaway by 9/19 at [email protected] or 802-899-9982.

The Northeast Kingdom Section

Jay Pass to Hazen’s Notch

The Upper Valley Ottauquechee Section

Griffith Lake to Peru Peak

From the end of USFS Road 58 (Porky Point), hike the Griffith Lake Trail to the north end of Griffith Lake and take the Long Trail south to Peru Peak Shelter.  After lunch, there are two options:

  2. Hike back to the start at Porky Point. 5.5 miles, 550-foot climb. Moderate. Both hikes start at the same point, and will hike together to and around the lake to the shelter, then diverge to return to our cars.
