2-Year Term Position — February 2022 – November 1, 2023. This position is temporary in nature and is currently funded for a one-year period with anticipation of second year funding to be secured in January 2022. The project is anticipated to occur during the 2022 and 2023 field seasons with possible extension into the 2024 field season if additional funding is secured.
The Burrows Project Field Coordinator is a critical position to the implementation of planned re-construction of the Burrows Trail on Camel’s Hump. The project is a joint effort of the Green Mountain Club and the Vermont Dept. of Forest, Parks, and Recreation. The Coordinator will be a part of the GMC’s professional field leadership staff working closely with the Director of Field Programs to ensure successful project completion.
The Burrows Project Field Coordinator serves as the bridge between the GMC Director of Field Programs and the FPR Recreation Specialist for the Essex District office. The Coordinator will also work in close communication with the GMC field leadership staff in utilization of GMC professional trail crews on the project. The position will work closely with representatives from other organizations that will field crews on the projects potentially including Youth Conservation Corps crews, AmeriCorps NCCC crews, individual AmeriCorps members, various interns, and volunteer groups. The field project coordinator will ensure seamless communication and planning among all partners working on the rebuild project.
The Burrows Project Field Coordinator will have a depth of experience in hiking trail construction including but not limited to stone construction techniques, water management, and trail layout. Preference will be given to individuals who have prior experience building trails in the New England or other regions with similar soil, precipitation, and trail use patterns. The Coordinator must also have project management experience and volunteer management experience. Additional experience with crew management, seasonal staff supervision, backpacking and backcountry living, and public education are essential to the success of the position.
The Burrows Project Field Coordinator will directly supervise GMC crews on the project and will serve as the project contact and coordinator for all other entities working on the project.
Salary range: $38,000- 42,000, depending upon qualifications and experience. The compensation package includes health insurance, retirement contributions, and paid vacation, sick, and volunteer days. Equal opportunity employer.
Specific job requirements include:
Trail Project Planning and Implementation
- Scouting and planning individual work site elements
- Utilizing data gathered by GMC and FPR to outline a plan seasonal work plan
- Ground truthing data
- Documentation of before and after photos of trail reconstruction
- Flagging or marking in another approved way the project sites for each crew
- Training individuals and groups on trail construction techniques
- Participating in GMC’s pre-season orientation for seasonal employees
- Direct supervision for GMC crews working on the project
- Work skills supervision of all other project partners
- Supervision of volunteers (individual and groups) working on the project
- Coordination of various project partners
- Ensuring that all environmental and permitting compliance is maintained
- Providing special attention to designated study plots for a 50+ year old scientific study
- Valid Driver’s License
- Wilderness First Aid certification required (class available during training); WFR preferred
- Extensive trail building and maintenance skills, experience with trail building tools
- Experience in leadership positions, preferably in trail crew or outdoor education
- Comfort and experience instructing others in diverse work environments
- Strong backcountry living skills, including cooking and waste management
- Ability to problem-solve independently and collaboratively in the backcountry
- Ability to adhere to weekly work schedules and flexibility to adjust schedules as required by project developments
- Experience working with agency and project partners
- Ability to live independently and work in a remote area with little supervision
- Knowledge of Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics
- Basic knowledge of Long Trail/Appalachian Trail system
- Ability to effectively communicate with individuals and groups
- Environmental and/or outdoor education experience
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at a time
- Ability to be on foot for prolonged periods of time, including hiking several miles daily
- Ability to perform difficult manual labor and to carry heavy loads as a regular part of the workday
