Giving Back to the Long Trail: Monthly Donor Spotlights

January 20, 2023 by Lily LaRegina Leave a Comment

Vermont’s mountains are loved for many different reasons: formative youth experiences, core memories with family, camaraderie and friendships developed on trail, awe and appreciation for nature and its mental and physical benefits. To improve these experiences, GMC relies on the support of members and donors to care for the trails and shelters of the Long Trail. The monthly donor program is a great option as it allows GMC to count on consistent financial support. It also makes things seamless for you, the donor! And as a thank you for your ongoing support, we will send GMC’s Long Trail calendar featuring the mountains and views you love.

Four individuals share why the Long Trail is important to them and why they support GMC through the monthly donor program.

Marc Vincent

Monthly donor Marc VincentMarc has been a monthly donor since 2019. He gives to support GMC’s education and stewardship work. Marc shares his love of hiking with his husband Alex and pooch Penny. They explore the Green Mountains often since moving to Vermont in 2016.

Shannon Tonelli

In 2021, Shannon moved to Vermont for a lifestyle change. She had traveled cross-country for a year and rediscovering her love of the outdoors and the challenges that come with spending time in nature. Access to nature is something she deeply values for her mental and physical well-being.

Monthly donor Shannon TonelliI wanted to make sure I helped maintain and protect the trails and places that were contributing to my happiness and well-being. Hiking in Vermont makes me feel more connected to nature, reminds me how big and small the world is, and helps me stay grounded. I appreciate that the GMC helps connect me with the land and with people who also love the land.

Andy Appel

A monthly donor since 2016, Andy takes comfort knowing GMC can count on his support. He hopes his contributions will help give the next generation an opportunity to have formative experiences in the outdoors, getting them “hooked for life” the way the GMC trails near Mt. Mansfield did for him as a kid.

Andy Appel, front row, far right, first backpacked on the Long Trail as a suburban kid in the ’60s.
Brad Salzman

Brad started backpacking in his 30s in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and later on the Long Trail. He calls joining GMC’s Upper Valley Ottaqueechee section the “best decision of my life,” having met many friends and his partner through trail work and volunteering.

Monthly donor Brad Salzman

There are many excellent organizations to donate to, and years ago, I got carried away until it got out of control. Eventually, I cut back to just a handful of causes, and this was one of the most important to me.

Can you join Brad, Andy, Shannon, and Marc and join the Monthly Giving Program today?
