GMC Land Conservation Year-by-Year

Since the Long Trail Protection Campaign launched in 1986, GMC has been able to conserve more lands almost every year in its bid to permanently protect the Long Trail corridor.  In that time, GMC has conserved more than 21,000 acres of land and protected more than 78 miles of the Long Trail.  GMC continues to strive to conserve the remaining 6.5 miles of the trail, which are spread throughout Vermont.

1986

  • GMC launches Long Trail Protection Campaign
    • At this point, GMC already owned 0.25 acres in Stowe, VT, on the shores of Sterling Pond, donated to GMC in 1979

1987

  • 1,846 acres acquired by GMC in Lowell, VT, protecting:

Join a guided hike on the Short Trail this summer!

Join the Green Mountain Club’s Visitor Services Manager, Emily Mosher, for a hike on the Short Trail! Learn more about hiking in Vermont, the Long Trail and the Green Mountain Club, and tips to have a successful hike as we explore the 0.5 mile loop at GMC’s headquarters building in Waterbury Center. These hikes are open to hikers of all ages, from beginner day hiker to seasoned backpacker. Hikes take place on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 10am, and on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 2pm. Allow about an hour with plenty of stops to explore.
