Hadsel-Mares Cabin is one of two rental cabins at the Wheeler Pond Camps site in Barton, Vermont. Alongside Jean Haigh Cabin, these two cabins offer a home base for exploring the Northeast Kingdom and the year-round recreation opportunities of the area.
Hadsel-Mares Cabin
650 square feet downstairs with bunks for 6, sleeping loft for 2 upstairs (guests supply their own sleeping pads). Uninsulated. Main living area. Separate dry kitchen with gray water bucket. North-facing screened porch. Wood stove and seasoned firewood provided. Outhouse.
Please be aware, the cabin is not insulated and will never get as warm as your home. When spending a night at Hadsel-Mares, come prepared with the gear and sleeping bags to keep you warm as if you were camping.

Cancelation Policy: Reservations canceled 15 days or more in advance will receive a 50% refund. Reservations canceled 14 days or less in advance are non-refundable. GMC is not able to give refunds based on weather or trail conditions.
Transfer Policy: Comparable reservations may be transferred within the booking year (May 1 to April 30), no less than 14 days in advance and subject to cabin availability. Contact [email protected] to request a reservation transfer.
At GMC's discretion, a facility cleanup/repair fee of up to $200 may be charged to the reservation's credit card if the facility requires cleaning or repairs after rental.
Reservations:
The cabin is available for rent year-round. Bookings open in March for the next rental year, which runs May 1st through April 30th of each year. GMC members may take advantage of a 24-hour early reservation period when reservations open for each season in the spring. Reservations for May 2025 through April 2026 will open up March 13th at 12 PM for GMC members and March 14th at 12 PM for the general public. Check-in/Check-out: Check-in is after 1:00 p.m. on the arrival date, and check-out is by 12:00 p.m. on the departure date.
Max. Occupancy: 8 guests.
Recreational Opportunities: Hiking, climbing, fishing, hunting, paddling, swimming, biking (road/mountain), XC ski touring, backcountry skiing, and lift-service downhill skiing. For hiking trails, you can check out our Northeast Kingdom Map.
Heat: Wood stove. Seasoned firewood provided.
Lights: Guest provided – bring your own headlamps, flashlights, and/or enclosed lanterns. No open flames, please.
Cooking: Guest provided – bring your own portable camp stove, pots, dishes, and utensils. For safety, please use stoves outdoors whenever possible.
Water: No potable supply. In winter: melt and treat snow. In summer: treat pond or stream water.
Toilet: Outhouse.
Phone: None; cell coverage spotty.
Pets: Well behaved household pets are welcome, but they should be leashed outdoors to protect water supplies, wildlife (especially the resident beaver population), and the neighborhood peace and quiet. Please clean up all pet waste and pack it out at the end of your stay.
Access: Driving directions will be provided in your reservation packet. Please note Wheeler Mountain Road is steep and can be challenging to drive, especially in winter and mud season. There are two parking areas, one on either side of Wheeler Mountain Road, with space for a total of eight cars. Please park efficiently and leave space for others. A trail from the eastern parking area leads one tenth of a mile in to the camps. The parking areas are for overnight guests with reservations. A public parking lot for day use is located 0.5 miles north of the camps on the right at the Moose Mountain and Wheeler Pond Trailhead.
