Introducing #GMCMudMadness, a six-week series of fun challenges and activities to keep you and your family active and entertained all mud season long.
We know this season can be a bit of a drag. The weather’s getting warmer in town and after a long, hunkered-down winter we’re eager to get outside — just as many trails close and become impassable due to mud. This year, a warmer and drier March means many lowest-elevation trails are nearly dry, but it’s still very much winter on the summits, and between here and there, there’s a whole lot of mud.
We probably don’t need to remind you why staying off muddy trails is important, but, if we do, it comes down to erosion. Wet trails are vulnerable to damage from every footstep because footsteps compact the trail, reducing its ability to absorb water, causing more flooding that carries the soil away. When hikers walk around mud puddles, they can also trample vegetation and widen trails, increasing our collective impact on the landscape.
Don’t despair, because GMC, along with a slew of wonderful partners, has over 15 different challenges to help you get outside, connect with the land, and protect the trails this season as we wait for the trails to dry. The best part? Weekly prize packages with goodies from The Mountain Goat, Outdoor Gear Exchange, Johnson Hardware, REI, Skida, Happy Vermont, Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel, King Arthur Baking, Darn Tough Vermont, and more.
How Do I Win?
It’s simple. All you need is a public Instagram account and a willingness to get outside. Each week (from Monday through Sunday), choose one of that week’s three challenges. Complete the activity the challenge asks for and share a photo of it on Instagram with the hashtag #GMCMudMadness, along with mentioning our partners. The following Monday, we’ll randomly select a winner from all of that week’s eligible entries. We’ll be resharing your entries all week long to keep your inspiration up as well.
