Mike Wetherell grew up backpacking with his family during extended trips around the U.S. and Canada and camping with his local scouting organization in Wisconsin. He’s continued his enjoyment and commitment to outdoor adventures throughout his life. He moved to Vermont in 2001 and never left. Mike has hiked throughout Vermont and the Northeast and also enjoys Nordic skiing, canoeing, and cycling.
Mike joined the Green Mountain Club in 2001 and has been active in the Montpelier Section since 2006 when he joined Lexi Shear and Dave Blumenthal in forming the section’s Young Adventurers Club to encourage young children and parents to hike, play, and learn about the outdoors and the Long Trail. He has been a YAC trip leader and coordinator for most of that time. In addition, he has served as the Montpelier Section’s director since 2012.
Though his degree from the University of Wisconsin is in English and Spanish, Mike has previously worked as an outdoor educator at summer camps, served as a Peace Corp educator in Ukraine, managed international exchange programs, and since 2001 has worked on environmental and youth action programs and supported business operations at the Institute for Sustainable Communities in Montpelier. Mike lives in Montpelier with his wife and two children.
