 End-to-Ender’s Workshop

Planning to hike the Long Trail end-to-end this year?  If you have questions for hikers who have completed the Long Trail or are looking for tips on planning, equipment, and food, join us for this informative evening with a panel of end-to-enders. Panelists will speak about their experience and demonstrate gear. Instructors: Volunteer Panel, GMC Education Staff. Free.  Register at least two weeks in advance for both on-site and off-site attendance.  

 

Map and Compass I: Land Navigation Basics

Saturday, May 25, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Develop your navigation skills in the woods with a map and compass. Build your confidence in using these essential outdoor tools as we practice “getting lost” and finding ourselves in indoor and outdoor exercises. Learn what to do when you run into a cliff or river, how to interpret terrain, and estimate distances. No experience necessary. Compasses provided. Snowshoes may be required. Be prepared to spend most of the day outdoors. Distance not to exceed 4 miles or 1,500 feet elevation gain. Hike rating: easy to moderate. Instructors: GMC Education Staff. Limit: 15. Fee: $65. Age Limit: 16 and up. Register at least two weeks in advance.

SOLO Wilderness First Aid (WFA)

Saturday and Sunday, June 22 & 23, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday, October 19 & 20, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Sign up early – this course fills fast! This sixteen-hour, hands-on course will prepare you to deal with medical emergencies in the field. The focus is on the prevention, recognition, and treatment of backcountry injuries and illnesses. Wilderness First Aid certification or Wilderness First Responder recertification provided upon completion. Please contact GMC if you need WFR recertification or CPR (additional fees apply). Instructors: SOLO staff. Limit: 30. Fee: $180. Contact GMC for a list of overnight accommodations. Register at least three weeks in advance.

 

Chainsaw Sawyer Workshop and Recertification

Saturday and Sunday, June 29 & 30, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
Private property, Reading


This comprehensive workshop will focus on chainsaw maintenance, sawyer safety, bucking, limbing, and limited felling. Successful participants will receive U.S. Forest Service certification, and will be qualified to saw on the Appalachian Trail. The first day of the course is a one-day recertification for currently certified or recently lapsed level B sawyers. Both days are required for initial certification. Instructors: Green Mountain National Forest and GMC staff. Limit: 12. Free, but limited to those who maintain the Appalachian Trail portion of the Long Trail system. Register at least three weeks in advance.


Hiking and Yoga

Sunday, July 28, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

Join us for a day of hiking and yoga with certified yoga instructor Faith Bieler. Faith will teach techniques of stress-reducing Hatha yoga, focusing on control of breath and movement. We will depart at 9:45 a.m. for a moderate five-hour hike, guided by Jenna Whitson and Nika Meyers, returning at 3:30 p.m. to finish the day with a relaxing yoga practice in GMC’s spacious meeting hall. All levels of yoga experience are welcome. Limit 20. Fee $20. Register at least two weeks in advance.

 
Long Trail Bound Educator Summit: An Outdoor Education Workshop for Educators

Tuesday, August 13, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

Do you dream of exploring the wonders of Vermont’s hiking trails with your class or a group of young adults, but aren’t sure where to begin? The Long Trail is a perfect outdoor classroom. Explore natural history, art, outdoor skills, science, math, geology, geography and much more during this one-day introductory workshop. We’ll cover group hiking, trip preparation, safety and low-impact hiking practices.  Participants will develop outdoor leadership skills, connect with other educators, and become familiar with our web-based Long Trail Bound activity guide. We hope to inspire you and be inspired by you! We’ll spend part of the day in the meeting hall, and then head off-site for a moderate afternoon hike. Professional development credit may be available. Instructors: GMC education staff, and guest speakers. Limit: 15. Fee: $50 (includes lunch and materials). Register at least two weeks in advance.


Leave No Trace Master Educator Courses

August 5-9, White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire

GMC has partnered with the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics to bring you this outstanding certification program. The Leave No Trace Master Course is a five-day workshop with four days of backpacking that provides a comprehensive overview of Leave No Trace skills and ethics through practical application outdoors. The first day is spent in a classroom, providing in-depth information on the Leave No Trace program, reviewing gear, and packing. The remaining days are spent on a short backcountry trip implementing the principles of Leave No Trace and practicing teaching techniques in a supportive peer environment. Ideal for trip leaders, outdoor professionals, land managers, and anyone interested in protecting the backcountry. Instructors: AMC and GMC Leave No Trace Master Educators. Limit: 8. Trail and Shelter Maintenance 101

Saturday, August 17, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Location: To be determined, north of Johnson


Learn the basics for the care of hiking trails and shelters by joining GMC field staff for this one-day field outing. We’ll get some clipping, tread definition and blazing done, and we’ll visit a shelter to review and discuss the finer points of shelter and outhouse maintenance. Plan on a full day, and dress appropriately for the work and weather, including sturdy shoes and work gloves. Pack a lunch and bring a quart/liter or two of fluids. No prior experience necessary; tools provided. Limit: 15. Free. Register by Friday, August 9.


Crosscut Sawyer Workshop

Saturday and Sunday, September 14 & 15, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
GMC Visitor Center, Waterbury Center


Learn safe and efficient use and maintenance of a crosscut saw and other hand tools. Gain hands-on experience cutting blowdowns and felling trees. Successful participants receive U.S. Forest Service certification for use of a crosscut saw to maintain trails in federal wilderness areas. Instructors: GMC and Green Mountain National Forest staff. Limit: 6. Free, but limited to those who maintain the Appalachian Trail on federal land. Register at least three weeks in advance.

Young Adventurers Club

The Young Adventurers Club is a Green Mountain Club program designed to get kids six and under and their parents outdoors to hike, play, learn, and make friends. YAC was originally founded by GMC’s Montpelier Section.

Bread Loaf Section YAC Calendar
Outings take place the first Saturday of the month from 9-11 a.m. or noon. All ages and abilities are welcome. There will be route options of varying length when possible. FEES
Workshop fees may include lodging, camping, lunch, or other meals – see workshop descriptions for details. Please contact GMC for information on what each workshop fee includes. GMC members – ask about your member discount. Not a member? Join and save.

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS
Refunds (minus a $10 processing fee) will be provided if cancellations are made prior to the registration deadline. Cancellations made after the registration deadline will be refunded 50 percent of the workshop fee only if the space is subsequently filled. No refunds for reservations cancelled less than three days before the workshop start date. GMC reserves the right to cancel a program at any time, in which case the club will notify registrants and a full refund will be provided.
